Pine County was established in 1856 from Chisago and Ramsey counties. In 1871 (or 1872) it was formally organized. Before its organization, it may have been attached to Chisago County for judicial purposes. In 1861 the county absorbed Buchanan County. Hinckley, north of Pine City, is a community of great historic importance.

Logging began here in 1869. The largest fire in Minnesota history, the Great Hinckley Fire, originated here in 1894, destroying Hinckley and many other nearby towns.  A rural school museum can also be found right in Pine City. Access to the St. Croix River is available at the historic ferry landing, which once provided a shortcut route between Minnesota and Wisconsin.
    
Pine City and Pine County offer a variety of historic attractions. You can enjoy a re-created circa 1804 world, linger at an Ojibwe encampment and walk with a costumed guide to a reconstructed wintering post for the North West Company. There you'll listen to a fur trade clerk explain the barter system and visit the demonstration area where you can experience the hands-on activities of daily fur trade life.
   
The North West Company Fur Post also offers 1.5 miles of trails through the woods and along the Snake River. The Fire Museum in Hinckley and Fort Folle Avione in Webster are also great spots for history buffs.
